She is currently involved in research projects in Greece and in the U.S. The first examines emergent responses to Greece’s economic and social crisis through alternative and solidarity mobilization, and particularly the movement to identify and disseminate traditional agricultural varieties. Her second project addresses the question of how to bridge the gap between small-scale production and large-scale market demand, and is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary examination of local and sustainable food aggregation and distribution models in the Southeastern United States. She has published in Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism, and contributed content to the encyclopedia Food Issues (2015, Ken Albala ed. Sage).
Her sustainable food aggregation research is currently supported by a grant from the S-SARE division of the USDA.
Dr. Papavasiliou serves on the executive committee for the Center for Hellenic Studies at GSU.
